Introduction to Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing experts, welcome to our very first official post regarding digital marketing. Today we'll focus on the introduction to digital marketing, defining digital marketing and online versus offline digital marketing.

What is digital marketing?

Digital marketing, popularly referred to as "online or internet marketing" can be defined as the component of marketing that uses the Internet, and online based digital technologies such as desktop computers, mobile phones and other digital media and platforms to promote products and services.

The two categories of digital marketing

Digital marketing can be divided into two categories, namely: online and offline digital marketing. Once classified into two, it then becomes incorrect to say digital marketing is internet marketing or online marketing.

Online digital marketing

Online digital marketing is referred to as online advertising or Internet marketing. The following five are the major types of online digital marketing:

Search engine optimization (SEO) – SEO is the process of optimizing your content so that it ranks higher in search engine results pages so that you drive more traffic to your website.

Search engine marketing (SEM) – With SEO, you’re using best practices to make traffic to your site organically. With SEM, however, you purchase ad space in paid search platforms such Google AdWords.

Content marketing – Content marketing involves content creation and distribution across all your online channels such as your blog, website, or social media. The content you create is not meant to be promotional but instead, stimulate interest and ultimately, improve brand awareness.

Social Media Marketing (SMM) – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn are some of the most prominent social media platforms. And social media marketing involves gaining traffic and attention from these channels.

● Email marketing – Email marketing is a type of direct marketing that uses emails to deliver marketing messages to its audience.

 Offline digital marketing

Offline digital marketing makes use of electronic devices that do not require connection to the internet. These devices include TV, Radio, Telephones(cold calling), billboards etc. These are not that popular in the modern day but can still be put to good use especially if your target market is not very big on the net.
